Design inspiration 4: Unusual sources

ABC bookmarkI find inspiration in some unusual places, including bookmarks and cake boxes. Cake boxesOf course both of these were the original work of an unknown designer. The designs wouldn’t work in the same way with fabric and quilting, either because of scale, type of shapes, or difficulty of piecing unusual shapes together, even if paper pieced.

Even building materials and road barriers catch my eye sometimes.  Where do you find inspiration?

I’m not good at sketching, and have trouble working out scale, particularly if the design looks good in a single block, it may not work when pieced together.

I’d love to know if you use a computer program for your designs and if you find this useful, particularly for getting an idea of overall layouts, not just individual blocks.

You have probably realised by now that I like warm colours!
